The Saga of a Kate Spade Purchase: How a $766 purchase can yield me $20,000 in value
This Is What Happens When the Points Math Actually Works
One of the things I say often in this hobby is this:
Points and miles should save you money, not cost you more.
And most of the time, that’s true.
But every once in a while, an opportunity shows up where the math is so strong that it’s worth stopping, calculating, and making a very intentional exception.
That’s exactly what happened in early January.
The British Airways Shopping Portal Surprise
Late one Friday night, in early January, the British Airways shopping portal lit up with an unusually high offer:
250 Avios per $1 spent.
That’s not a typo. That’s what it showed. Kate Spade had high multipliers across other shopping portals as well, not just BA. When these multipliers show up, it is quite possibly an error, and it might be worth jumping on the purchases. Please remain financially responsible in the midst of high multipliers.
Here’s what 250x looks like in real numbers:
- $100 spend = 25,000 Avios
- $250 spend = 62,500 Avios
- $1,000 spend = 250,000 Avios
Those are numbers you usually only see attached to large sign-up bonuses, not online shopping portals.
Ironically, earlier that next day I had Threads post scheduled a reminder that this hobby shouldn’t push you into spending money you wouldn’t otherwise spend. Timing is funny like that.
Did I Take Advantage of It?
Yes. I did.
I spent $766 and earned approximately 190,000 Avios.
Now here’s the part that matters. I didn’t do this blindly or emotionally. I did it because I already knew the redemption value of Avios for our travel style and I had a trip in mind.
Of note, 3 days later, one of the items I purchased was sold out. Turning my $766 purchase into $594. Regardless, $594×250=148,500 possible BA Avios.

Why the Math Worked for Us
Avios are incredibly useful for certain sweet spots, especially when flying partners like Aer Lingus.
For example:
- CLE or PIT to DUB can run about 45,000 Avios one way in business class (these are my home airports)
- That means roughly 90,000 Avios roundtrip per person
- 190,000 Avios was enough for two roundtrip business class tickets to Europe. 148,000 can make a huge dent into that 190,000 needed, but alas that is why we earn transferable currencies and use transfer partners.
- These flights are easily $5,000 flights each. So 135,000 Avios will easily yield $15,000 in return value. Even leaving me an additional 13,000 Avios miles in the end. I really wish the last item had cleared. Alas, I will rely on another transferable currency to get the last flight.
Those same flights would easily cost several thousand dollars in cash, each.
So while I originally spent $766 upfront, I was positioning us for a business class European trip that would otherwise be far out of reach for that price.
Layering Points Without Forcing Spend
There was another layer to this decision.
I’m currently working toward the sign-up bonus on my Citi Strata Elite, so this spend also helped me move closer to that goal. That’s not the reason I made the purchase, but it made the opportunity even stronger.
This is what intentional stacking looks like.
Not forcing spend. Not buying things just to earn points. But recognizing when spend aligns with a larger plan.
This was a little forced, but it was within my budget. Had I not been able to cover the cost of the $766, I would have opted to NOT make this purchase.
Did I Need What I Bought?
No. I didn’t need anything from Kate Spade.
And that’s an important thing to admit.
But I also didn’t panic buy or justify it emotionally. I knew exactly why I was doing it and what the expected return would be.
That said, I also put safeguards in place.
How I Protected Myself
Here’s my rule for portal plays like this:
- Items stay boxed and unused
- Tags stay on
- Nothing gets touched until points post
If the Avios didn’t show up? Everything was going back.
That’s how you participate in opportunities without letting them run you over.
The Saga
Within 48 hours of purchase, the points posted at 4x. 4X! I was a little perturbed but not shocked that British Airways did this. I was not the only one who made this purchase. I submitted a claim letting them know why I made the purchase and that it was driven by the 250x multiplier.
Kate Spade has a 30 day return window and British Airways customer service said I could expect an answer within 28 days.

The Outcome
Twenty-eight days later, right in the middle of a workday, I jumped on Threads and saw people sharing that their British Airways Shopping portal purchases were finally pending at the full 250x, not the temporary 4x. I refreshed my account… and there it was.
I won’t sugarcoat it. I was having a rough day. Seeing this was genuinely the bright spot.
That puts 148,000 British Airways Avios on the way to my account. While the portal notes that points can take 8–12 weeks to fully post, I’m expecting to see them land around March.
In the meantime, I’m already mapping out how to use these Avios, with the goal of turning this one shopping portal win into round-trip flights to Europe in 2027.
The Bigger Lesson
This hobby absolutely should save you money.
If points and miles are pushing you into spending more, stressing more, or justifying purchases you can’t afford, something is off.
But there are moments when the math genuinely maths and when used intentionally, a short-term cash outlay can unlock outsized travel value.
The key is knowing the difference.
Final Thought
This isn’t about chasing every deal.
It’s about understanding your redemptions, knowing your numbers, and acting only when the value is clear.
I’ll always choose strategy over hype.
And I’ll always tell you when I’m making an exception.. and why.
I’d love to hear what similar opportunity you’ve done that has given you such outsized value that you couldn’t NOT jump on it?
