A Simple $2 Moment That Changed How I Approach Points and Miles
Small Rewards Add up: Points, Miles, and Shopping Portal Stacking
A simple real-life analogy that explains why stacking points, miles, and shopping portals matters MORE than you think.
I cleaned out my car door pocket recently and dumped the loose change into my hand. Pennies, nickels, dimes, a couple of quarters. Nothing exciting.
When I counted it, it was just over $2.
Two dollars doesn’t feel like anything worth paying attention to. Most people would toss it back into the car or drop it into a cup holder and forget about it.
But here’s where I want you to pause for a second.
I also have a large container of coins at home. The kind you add to without thinking. I haven’t counted it in years, but I know it probably holds a few hundred dollars by now.
And this is the part I hope clicks for you.
That $2 didn’t feel meaningful on its own. Neither did the handful of coins I dropped into that container years ago. But over time, they quietly added up to something real.
That’s exactly how points and miles work.
The mistake most people make with points and miles
Most people think points and miles only matter when you’re booking a flight or a hotel.
They focus on the big numbers:
- A huge sign-up bonus
- A business class redemption
- A fancy hotel stay
But they completely ignore the small stuff. The everyday earning. The “loose change.”
And just like that $2 in my car door, it doesn’t feel worth paying attention to in the moment.
Until it adds up.
Points and miles are just digital loose change
Every time you shop online without a portal, you’re leaving points behind.
Every time you use the wrong card, you’re leaving points behind.
Every time you don’t stack:
- a shopping portal
- with the right credit card
- with the highest multiplier
you’re walking past money on the ground.
It doesn’t hurt.
It doesn’t feel expensive.
It just quietly disappears.
How I “stack my coins” in the points and miles world
Before I buy anything online, I check:
- CashbackMonitor to see which shopping portal is paying the most
- SaveWise for extra offers or stacking opportunities
- CardPointers to make sure I’m using the best card for that purchase
Then I:
- Click through the portal with the highest payout
- Use the card that earns the most points on that category
- Let the points pile up quietly in the background
No extra spending.
No complicated tricks.
Just intentional choices.
It’s the same mindset as tossing every coin into a jar instead of leaving it in the car.
Why this matters more than people realize
One shopping portal bonus might be 2x or 5x.
One “better” card might earn an extra 2 points per dollar.
On one purchase, that’s nothing exciting.
Over a year?
That’s flights.
That’s hotel nights.
That’s upgrades you didn’t think you’d afford.
That’s how people travel more without spending more.
The real lesson
Points and miles aren’t about being perfect.
They’re about being consistent.
You don’t need to chase every deal.
You don’t need 20 credit cards.
You just need to stop leaving points behind.
Because just like loose change, it all adds up.
And one day, you’ll look at your balance and think:
“How did I get all of this?”
