Why I Walked Away From Casino Status Matching (And What I Learned)

Why Casino Status Matches Aren’t Always “Free”

In January of 2025, I drove to Atlantic City to take advantage of a casino status match. I had matched in 2023 and needed to do a rematch. At the time, I was matching my Caesars Diamond status to Bally’s Superstar, thanks to the Wyndham Business Earner Card (RIP to that benefit..  we all know it’s long gone now). Cue sobbing.

The plan was simple.
Match Caesar’s Diamond → Bally’s Superstar.

The goal? Stay on the status match ride for more “free” or deeply discounted cruises.

And for 2023-2024, it worked brilliantly for us.

In January 2025, I had already gone through the casino status match cycle before. I had matched to Ocean. I took a cruise on MSC Meraviglia. I then matched to Wynn in Las Vegas. This led to an offer from Holland America. We also took advantage of the Atlantis stay in the Bahamas.. twice.. and received 20% off two Norwegian cruises, twice as well.

All of that started because of one credit card: the Wyndham Business Earner.

For about 18–24 months, that card was the hardest-working card in my wallet.

But here’s the part people don’t always talk about.

The Part No One Likes to Mention

Casino status matching isn’t actually “free”, nothing in the points and miles world is.

Yes, you can technically book a cruise for just taxes and fees. Yes, you can stay in the assigned room. And yes, you can do it on a tight budget.

But that’s not how we travel.

We like balconies.
We like excursions.
We like thermal suites.

And once you start adding those things back in, the “free” cruise quickly becomes… not so free.

On top of that, there’s the time cost:

• Driving to Atlantic City
• Flying to Las Vegas
• Hotel stays
• Food
• Transportation
• Time away from home

Even when flights are cheap and hotels are booked with points, it all adds up. And to be honest, it probably was close to the same original cost when we did all the extra chasing.

Why I Didn’t Re-Match This Time

As of today, Sunday, December 28, I still hold Bally’s Superstar status. In theory, I could drive to Atlantic City. I could match to MGM Icon. Then I could head to Ocean and match to Prime before December 31.

But I’m not doing it.

Why? Well, we have a snowstorm coming … lol but it’s mainly because ..

I’m not a gambler.
I don’t enjoy it.
I don’t want to force myself into casino trips. I can’t justify doing this just to maintain a status I only use for one cruise a year.

And more importantly.. I’ve realized something after four years in this hobby:

Not every “deal” is actually a deal for every person.

The Bigger Picture

Over the last four years, I’ve saved a lot of money using points and miles. That’s over $147,000 in redeemed value, but who’s counting. But I’ve also spent more than I probably should have after using my points and miles. Like food, souvenirs, and the normal everyday costs that go with .. life.

And that’s okay. I learned from it. I have enjoyed EVERY minute of all the travel we have had.

As I head into 2026 and beyond, my focus is shifting:

  • Lower out-of-pocket costs
  • More intentional travel
  • More evaluation of what perks where and why

I love this hobby. I believe points and miles can dramatically reduce the cost of travel. AND I’m also aware of the opportunity cost.. the time, energy, and money that go into keeping up with it all.

None of this bothers me to be honest, but I want to be more intentional in my trips. 2025 taught me how to work backwards from picking the trip, choosing the right cards around that trip. I still think I can be better though.

My Honest Take on Casino Status Matching

If you:

  • Love cruising
  • Gamble occasionally
  • Enjoy the chase
  • Have flexibility and time

Then casino status matching can be a great tool.

But if you:

  • Don’t gamble
  • Don’t enjoy casino environments
  • Feel pressure to “keep up”
  • Are trying to simplify your travel

Then it might not be worth it.

And that’s okay.

You don’t have to play this game the same way anyone else does.. including me. This doesn’t mean I won’t keep my eye on the pulse of the casino status matches. It means I will be better in how I chase them.

Final Thoughts

This hobby is personal.

Use points and miles in a way that fits your life, your budget, and your goals. Don’t chase every trend. Don’t force trips just because they’re “free.” And don’t feel behind if you choose a simpler path.

Travel hacking should make your life easier..  not more complicated.
