What Is a Transfer Bonus?
A transfer bonus is when a bank temporarily gives you extra miles or points for moving your rewards to a travel partner. Instead of the standard 1:1 transfer rate, you get a percentage added on top — so your points go further before you even book anything.
Example: If Chase offers a 20% transfer bonus to Air Canada Aeroplan, then 50,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points becomes 60,000 Aeroplan miles — at no extra cost.

How Point Transfers Work
Most major credit card programs — Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou Points — allow you to move points to airline and hotel loyalty programs. These are called transfer partners.
The standard transfer ratio is 1:1, meaning 1,000 credit card points becomes 1,000 miles or hotel points. Transfer bonuses temporarily change this ratio in your favor.
The basic mechanics:

How to Evaluate a Transfer Bonus
Not every transfer bonus is worth acting on. Here’s how to think about it before you move any points.
Step 1 — Do you have a specific redemption in mind?
A transfer bonus only has value if you already know what you’re booking. Never transfer points speculatively just because a bonus exists. Miles sitting in an airline account often offer fewer options than your flexible credit card points.
Step 2 — Is the award available?
Before transferring a single point, confirm the flight or hotel is actually bookable at that price. Award availability can change fast, and once you transfer, there’s no going back.
Step 3 — Does the math actually work?
Calculate your cents-per-point value with the bonus applied. A 20% bonus on a mediocre redemption is still a mediocre redemption. You want to target 1.5–2+ cents per point for flights, or strong hotel value that beats paying cash.
Step 4 — Transfer only what you need
Don’t over-transfer. Move exactly the number of points required for the booking, plus a small buffer if the program allows it. Leftover airline miles are harder to use flexibly than credit card points.
